What is gambling?

Gambling is "the act of risking money or something else of value on an activity with an uncertain outcome."

Examples: Playing cards or video games for money, buying raffle tickets, Scratch offs, bingo, casino gambling, betting on who’s going to win the next game of pool, or wagering your favorite CD on the outcome of a sports event—it’s all gambling.

What is problem gambling?

Problem gambling is any gambling behavior that has a bad effect on your life, or the lives of people close to you: parents, brothers and sisters or your friends.

Problem Gambling Treatment

Newlife Counseling Services, LLC, is contracted by the Arizona Division of Problem Gambling, Treatment Assistance Program (TAP) to provide counseling to individuals, their family members and others affected by their own or someone else’s gambling problem. The counseling services are paid for by state-funded TAP program. If you are unsure if your gambling rises to the level of a problem, please take the Brief Biosocial Gambling Screen (BBGS) listed below: (A “yes” answer to any of the questions means your are at risk for developing a gambling problem).

Brief Biosocial Gambling Screen:

1. During the past 12 months, have you become restless, irritable or anxious when trying to stop or

cut down on gambling? __ Yes or __ No

2. During the past 12 months, have you tried to keep your family or friends from knowing how much you gambled? __ Yes or __ No

3. During the past 12 months did you have such financial trouble as a result of your gambling that you had to get help with living

expenses from family, friends or welfare? __ Yes or __ No

(TAP) is available for family members and others affected by someone else's gambling problem, as well as for gamblers.
